Uniting audiences around a crowdfunding campaign

Headed by architect Jacques Rougerie, oceanographer Jacques Piccard and astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien, the SeaOrbiter is both an "ocean exploration vessel" project and a "floating oceanographic laboratory". It is without doubt one of the finest projects of the early 21st century in terms of technological innovation and environmental protection. A crowdfunding campaign was conducted from the United States to finance part of the vessel's showpiece: its eye.

The challenge:

The objective of this unusual campaign was twofold: - Raise funds to finance part of the vessel's eye - Raise awareness about the project and unite audiences, especially the younger generation, around it

The challenge was all the more difficult because there were many obstacles: the campaign was organised on the French platform KissKissBankBank, which had just set up shop in the United States. The budget and time allocated to PR were limited, which required us to be very effective with few actions. Finally, none of the project's potential speakers spoke English. Therefore, OXYGEN US had to take care of all the translations during interviews.

The recommended plan of action:

Crowdfunding campaigns take place over a relatively short time, so the success of the communication lay in the careful preparation of it upstream. The OXYGEN US agency, therefore, chose to negotiate an exclusive on an embargoed basis with an American flagship media to ensure qualitative fallout on D-Day and bet on media resonance the following days. In additions, press releases were released on the day of the campaign's launch and at its end, to highlight the achievement of the objective. Major work on media segmentation was performed by the OXYGEN US team in order to reach a wide and varied audience (Real Estate, Environment, Youth, Business, etc.)
