Brand awareness: definition
Brand awareness refers to being known and recognized by consumers. It is a concept closely tied to brand image, which relates to how the brand is perceived.
Brand awareness is a crucial concept, as it is considered a key factor in driving purchasing decisions. You stand little chance of being chosen by consumers who are unaware of your brand’s existence (with the exception of impulse or low-involvement buys). Consumers who are familiar with you will be much more inclined to buy your products.
How to Measure Brand Awareness?
To measure a brand’s awareness, three key indicators are used:
- Spontaneous awareness: the brand comes to mind unprompted when asked a question like, “Can you name any brands in [industry]?”
- Aided awareness: the brand is featured on a list or mentioned by the interviewer: “Which of these [industry] brands are you familiar with?”
The aided awareness rate is higher than the spontaneous awareness rate.
- Top-of-mind awareness: in a spontaneous awareness study, top-of-mind awareness corresponds to the number of times the brand is cited first.
Why track changes in brand awareness?
Changes in the spontaneous awareness rate can serve as a strong indicator of advertising investment effectiveness. As a brand is mentioned spontaneously more often, a clear link can be made with ad exposure frequency, quality, recall, and other factors.
Brand awareness studies are, in fact, often conducted to measure the impact of an advertising campaign.
How to improve brand awareness?
Improving brand awareness generally involves implementing a well-crafted branding strategy using levers such as:
- Advertising
- Press Relations
- Influencer partnerships
- Event creation

Infonet: A disruptive billboard strategy driving brand awareness
To illustrate the impact of a bold branding strategy on awareness metrics, let us look at the work done by our strategic consulting unit o3 for the brand Infonet.
The challenge:
The financial sector often suffers from an austere and highly codified image, which holds back the growth of strong spontaneous awareness among a B2B audience or retail investors. Infonet’s objective was clear: stand out, make a lasting impression, and establish a strong presence in the urban landscape.
Our outdoor advertising strategy:
Our agency decided to shake up the traditional rules of financial communication. Rather than opting for the usual shades of blue and corporate rhetoric, our strategic unit o3 designed a disruptive outdoor advertising campaign. Deployed across strategic geographical areas (notably key business districts in Paris and regional centers), the campaign relied on concise messaging, high-impact design, and a memorable tagline.
The impact on brand awareness:
Thanks to this tailored approach, post-campaign studies revealed impressive results:
- Surge in aided awareness: The massive presence across the billboard network enabled the audience to immediately identify Infonet from a list of competitors.
- Increase in Top of Mind: The bold messaging allowed the brand to establish a lasting presence in the minds of professionals, significantly driving up first-place mentions in market surveys.
Key figures:
- 32% saw the campaign
- 65% remember it
- 65% say the campaign is original
- 50% find it entertaining
- Press coverage: nearly 35 articles generated, covering both INFONET’s innovation and the industry-wide transparency issues raised by Infonet CEO Julien Dupé.
“We were really looking to make a lasting impression and drive transparency forward! The ultra-bold creative concept proposed by O3, combined with the Paris metro campaign, allowed us to do just that: reach the widest possible audience and spark surprise. A true success!” — Julien Dupé, CEO of INFONET
Thanks to the combination of our diverse areas of expertise, O3, the Oxygen group’s branding agency, supports you in building a strong, memorable brand. We craft tailored strategies to boost your brand awareness.
